Trenching for Services and Drainage in Wollongong

Behind every working stormwater line, power connection, irrigation system and sewer upgrade is a neatly dug trench. It might not be glamorous, but accuracy matters, because the right depth, width and fall make all the difference to how well your services perform. Trenching in Wollongong requires careful planning, especially with our varied soils, sloping blocks and busy underground networks.
We use quality machinery to dig clean, consistent trenches, with proper shoring and safety measures where required, then backfill and compact them to the correct standard. Whether it’s a short run across a backyard or a long stretch for a new development, we’ll work efficiently and keep disruption to a minimum. Planning plumbing, drainage, electrical or data works? Trenching Jobs Across Wollongong
Stormwater and Sewer Lines
New house connections, stormwater runs to the kerb or another approved discharge point, and sewer extensions for granny flats or renovations. Your licensed plumber sets out the line, we dig along it, and we keep the trench dry enough for the pipe to be laid and tested.
Power and Data Conduit
Need power to a shed, gate motor or solar battery, or an NBN lead-in and data cable between buildings? We trench to your electrician's requirements and leave it open for their inspection before any backfill goes back in.
Subsoil Drainage and Soak Pits
Yard still soggy long after the last big rain? Gravel-packed subsoil drains, plus soak pits where the soil suits, draw water away from lawns, slabs and house footings so the ground dries out faster. It's a common fix on reactive clay and low-lying blocks.
Irrigation and Tap Lines
A narrow trencher cuts shallow runs for sprinklers, garden taps and rainwater tank lines while keeping damage to your lawn to a minimum. Where possible, we peel the turf back and lay it again once the pipe is in, so the yard recovers quickly.
Builders' Footing Trenches
Strip footings and beam trenches for slabs, fences, block walls and extensions, dug square, clean and to the engineer's depth. We keep spoil clear of the edges so the walls hold their shape and the steel fixers can start straight away.
Pool and Spa Services
New pools and spas generally need plumbing and power run between the pump enclosure and the house or meter box. We trench the route, separate lines into their own runs where that's required and work with your pool builder so landscaping isn't delayed.
Booking Trenching in Wollongong in Three Steps
Running new power, water, stormwater or NBN conduit? Let us know what the trench will carry and the rough path it takes, and we'll plan a neat, accurate dig with you from the outset.
- Connect us with your trade: Pass on your plumber's or electrician's details and we'll confirm trench depth and width with them directly.
- Describe the route: Give us the approximate length, required depth, start and end points, and any paths, driveways or gardens along the way.
- Have us check the ground: We review service plans and look for rock and tree roots along the line before confirming the price and dig date.
A good trench makes life easier for the trade that follows: straight walls, a clean, even base and the exact depth they wanted. Once their work is done, we backfill, compact and clean up so the yard is back in use. Send a message to our Wollongong crew through the contact page to arrange a free quote.
How Our Wollongong Trenching Crew Works
Grades Set By Laser
Drain lines need an even fall along their entire length. We set the grade with a laser or dumpy level and check it from end to end, then once more before backfill, because digging a trench up again is an expensive way to fix a low spot.
Private Lines Taken Into Account
Utility plans show the public network only, not the pipes and cables added by you or earlier owners. We ask about past work on the property and can call in a private service locator when the route crosses older or much-renovated yards.
Correct Cover On Every Service
Water, sewer, power and data all have minimum cover depths so whoever digs next doesn't hit them. We dig to those rules and to your plumber's or electrician's requirements, not simply until the ground gets tough.
Trenches Kept Safe
Walls in saturated sand, soft ground near the lagoons or loose fill can give way without warning. Deeper trenches are battered, benched or shored to suit the soil, and any open section is fenced or covered whenever we leave the site.
Tidy Spoil Management
Excavated soil sits on tarps or in a set area rather than spreading across the lawn, and the surplus gets carted off. When rain is around, we take extra steps to stop loose soil and mud washing out of the yard and into the stormwater drains.
Reinstatement Done Neatly
Hard surfaces are saw cut in straight lines before we dig, and the concrete, pavers or turf are put back to match as closely as possible. The aim is for you to have trouble finding where the trench ran.

Trenching FAQs
Common Wollongong trenching questions, covering service depths, avoiding existing lines, preventing sunken trench lines, crossing driveways and pricing.
That depends on what's going into it. Stormwater and sewer pipes are driven by the fall they require, so trenches often get deeper the longer the run. Water supply pipes need enough cover to keep them safe from traffic and accidental strikes, while underground power and telecommunications cables must sit below minimum depths set by the relevant standards and network operators, normally with marker tape laid above. Your licensed plumber or electrician will usually specify the depth for their part. Those rules are there to protect your services from future digging, so we follow them rather than taking shortcuts.
By doing the groundwork before the digging. Trenching is riskier than most excavation because it runs in a line and meets whatever lies across its path, so we start by lodging a Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry to see what crosses or follows the route. Where a known line crosses the trench, we expose it by hand before any machine gets close. BYDA doesn't show private lines, so let us know about anything you're aware of, such as an old sprinkler line, a cable out to the shed or an unrecorded stormwater pipe. You often know your yard better than any plan.
Not when it's backfilled properly. Loose soil shovelled back into a trench keeps settling for months, especially through a wet Illawarra autumn, leaving a sunken line across the lawn or driveway. Compacting the fill in thin layers as it goes back in stops that from happening, and under driveways or paving we normally swap the dug soil for crushed rock. It matters even more under hard surfaces, because when the trench settles, the concrete or pavers on top drop too. Taking care with backfill adds a little time on the day and saves a repair down the line.
Absolutely, and it comes up often, since new services frequently have to cross the driveway. We saw cut the concrete in neat lines instead of breaking it roughly, giving a firm edge to pour against and a tidier patch. After the services go in, we backfill with compacted road base in layers and repour the section, doweling or tying in steel where that's sensible. The patch will look different to begin with, as fresh concrete is always lighter than an aged slab, and it can take a year or two to tone in. If appearance is important, resurfacing the whole driveway later gives an even finish.
Length, depth, ground type and access all count, so we quote after walking the route. Sandy loam digs fast, clay is slower, and sandstone or shale, which is common toward the escarpment, can slow progress right down and sometimes calls for a rock breaker or a trencher fitted with rock teeth. Extra depth adds cost faster than extra length, because deeper trenches have to be benched, battered or shored before anyone can safely work in them. Cutting and reinstating concrete or paving adds to the job, tight older blocks or steep escarpment yards may need compact machines, and any soil leaving site brings carting and tip fees. Your price reflects what we actually find on the ground.
