Ocean Pool and Rock Pool Concrete Repairs in Wollongong

The Illawarra’s ocean rock pools, strung along the coast from Stanwell Park to Kiama, are some of the most loved spots in the region. They also sit in the toughest place concrete can be, with waves crashing over the walls, salt eating at the steel and sand wearing down every surface. We carry out ocean pool repairs in Wollongong and nearby, fixing cracked walls, broken edges, worn floors, steps and rail footings.
Because these pools are usually managed by councils, we mostly work for councils, their contractors and community groups who help look after them. Every repair is timed around low tide and the swell, using marine repair mortars and concrete designed to cope with seawater. We keep the work area safe for the public and protect the rock platform around the pool. If your pool is showing its age, get in touch and we will take a look.
Ocean and Rock Pool Repairs We Carry Out
Pool Wall Patching and Rebuilds
The seaward wall of a rock pool takes the full force of the swell. We break out loose, cracked or hollow concrete, treat any exposed steel and rebuild the wall face with marine repair mortar or a fresh pour, depending on how deep the damage goes.
Floor and Bench Repairs
Pool floors and seating ledges wear unevenly, leaving potholes, scoured joints and rough patches that catch swimmers' feet. We clean these back to sound material and fill them so the surface is smooth and safe again.
Edge and Coping Restoration
Broken edges and crumbling coping are a trip hazard and let waves get behind the concrete. We reform and recast damaged edges so they hold their shape and give swimmers a clean, solid line to walk along.
Steps and Ladder Landings
Entry steps into the pool see constant traffic and are often slippery. We repair or rebuild concrete steps and the landings around ladders, with a textured finish that gives better footing on wet days.
Handrail and Fixture Footings
Rusting rail bases crack the concrete around them as the steel expands. We cut out the damaged footing, set new fixings to the replacement rail's details and reinstate the concrete around them.
Drain and Valve Surrounds
Many ocean pools have outlets or sluices used to drain and clean them. The concrete around these openings often breaks down first, so we repair the surrounds and reseat frames where needed.
Three Ways to Get Your Ocean Pool Repairs Underway
Every ocean pool has its own quirks, from how quickly it fills to how hard the swell hits the wall. Here is how we usually get started.
- Share the condition report: If an engineer or asset manager has already inspected the pool, mention the report in the form and have it ready for the site visit so we can price the listed repairs.
- Describe what you are seeing: No report yet? Tell us about the cracks, loose edges, rusting rails or rough patches, and we will suggest the right type of repair.
- Walk the pool with us at low tide: With the pool drained or low, we can sound the concrete for hollow spots, check access across the rock platform and plan how many tides the work will take.
Much of the damage in ocean pools comes from corroded reinforcement, which is why this work overlaps with our concrete spalling and rebar corrosion repair service. Smaller cracks in less exposed areas can sometimes be handled with techniques from our concrete crack repair work, and where a wall or ledge is beyond saving, we can rebuild it in marine-grade concrete. Why Councils and Pool Groups Call Us for Repairs
Low Tide, Every Time
Rock pool repairs only happen when the sea lets us in. We plan around the tide chart and the swell, and we pack up early if conditions turn rather than push our luck.
Repair Materials Made for the Sea
Ordinary patching mixes do not last in salt water. We use marine repair mortars and concrete matched to the job and, where an engineer is involved, to their specification.
Safety Around the Public
Ocean pools are busy places. We fence off work zones, keep tools and materials secure and coordinate closures with the people who manage the pool.
Respect for the Rock Platform
The rock shelves around these pools are home to plenty of marine life. We contain slurry, dust and cement washout and leave the platform as clean as we found it.
Fixing the Cause, Not Just the Crack
If spalling is coming from rusting steel or a wall is being undermined, a surface patch will not last. We look for why the damage started and explain what a lasting repair involves.
Easy to Work With

Ocean Pool Repair Questions
What councils, contractors and community groups across the Illawarra ask us about repairing ocean and rock pools.
Most of the region's ocean rock pools are managed by the local council, whether that is Wollongong City Council, Shellharbour City Council or Kiama Municipal Council. That means repair works are usually commissioned by the council or by a contractor working for it, and sometimes with the involvement of a community or swimming club. We are happy to price repair packages for any of these, but the decision to proceed rests with whoever is responsible for the pool.
Yes, but only in the right windows. Pools are usually drained or partly drained at low tide, which gives a few hours to break out, prepare and place repairs. Marine repair mortars are chosen partly because they cope with being wetted relatively soon after placement. Larger rebuilds may need temporary bunds, pumping or several tide cycles, and calm seas are essential. We plan the sequence around the tide chart and the forecast.
Seawater carries chlorides that slowly work their way into concrete. Once they reach the reinforcing steel, it starts to rust, and rust takes up more room than the original steel, so it cracks and pops off the concrete cover. Wave impact, sand abrasion and constant wetting and drying add to the wear. Older pools were also built before modern marine durability standards, so many have less cover over the steel than a new structure would.
It depends on the scale. Routine maintenance by the managing council may be handled under its own processes, while bigger rebuilds on the rock platform can involve coastal planning controls and agencies with an interest in the foreshore and marine habitat. Because pools sit on Crown or council land in the coastal zone, the asset owner normally sorts out approvals before work starts. Always confirm the requirements with the council and relevant state agencies; for structural work a coastal or structural engineer is usually involved.
That depends on how deep the damage went, how well the old concrete was prepared and how exposed the pool is. A well-prepared repair using a proper marine mortar, with corroded steel cleaned or replaced, will far outlast a quick surface patch. Even so, ocean pools sit in one of the harshest environments concrete can face, so regular inspections and small repairs before damage spreads will always be part of looking after them.
