Wollongong 32 MPa Structural Concrete

Some concrete only has to look good and carry foot traffic. Structural concrete has a harder job: holding up a house, spanning a balcony, retaining a cut on a steep block or carrying heavy vehicles day after day. We supply and place 32 MPa reinforced structural concrete in Wollongong for the slabs, footings, walls and heavy-duty pavements where your engineer has called for a stronger mix and proper steel.

A higher grade on the drawings only pays off if the work on site matches it. That means the right reinforcement held at the right depth, solid formwork, a mix delivered to specification, thorough compaction and careful curing afterwards. We work from your engineering plans, line up inspections before the pour and take the time to get each step right, so the finished concrete performs the way it was designed to.

What we pour

Where We Use 32 MPa Concrete Around Wollongong

House Slabs and Footings

New homes, extensions and granny flats on Illawarra clay or escarpment shale are often specified in N32 when the engineer wants extra strength in the slab, edge beams and strip footings. We set out, dig, steel and pour to the drawings, then cure the slab properly so it reaches the grade it was designed for.

Suspended Slabs and Beams

Balconies, floors over garages and slabs spanning onto walls or piers carry load through bending, not just bearing on the ground. These elements need sound formwork, propping, heavier bar and a mix that hits its strength, and 32 MPa is a common call from engineers for exactly this kind of work.

Heavy-Duty Driveways and Hardstands

A driveway that sees a loaded tradie ute, a caravan, a delivery truck or a small tipper every so often works harder than a standard family car driveway. Where the plans call for it, we pour 32 MPa with thicker sections and extra steel at edges and entries, so the slab copes with the weight it will actually carry.

Retaining Walls

Reinforced concrete and core-filled walls holding back soil on sloping blocks under the escarpment are structural elements in every sense. The engineer sets the bar, the footing size and usually the grade, and we build the base and stem to those details with drainage behind the wall so water pressure doesn't build up.

Commercial and Light Industrial Floors

Workshop floors, warehouse bays and showroom slabs take forklifts, pallet racking and steady traffic. A 32 MPa mix laid at the right thickness, with joints planned around the use of the space, gives a hard-wearing floor that holds up under daily work.

Garage and Shed Slabs

A garage or big colorbond shed floor might hold a car hoist, a boat, machinery or heavy benches. If your engineer or shed supplier specifies N32, we form it up with thickenings under the portal frame footings and cast in the hold-down bolts so the slab and structure work together.

Getting started

Three Ways to Get Your 32 MPa Structural Concrete Job Moving

Structural concrete starts on paper. Whether it's a new concrete slab, deep concrete foundations or a heavy-duty concrete driveway, we begin by understanding what the design asks for and what the site will allow.

  • Share your engineering plans: Send the drawings and soil report through the form and we'll review the grade, reinforcement, cover and slab details, then price exactly what's specified.
  • Still at the design stage? Tell us what you're building and where. We can explain what an engineer will usually need from you and how site conditions like slope or clay may shape the design.
  • Ask about access early: On steep escarpment blocks, pump placement and truck access affect the price and the plan, so we sort them out at the site visit rather than on pour day.

Not every job needs a structural grade. For lighter paths, patios and minor slabs, plain 20–25 MPa concrete is often the sensible choice, and we're happy to tell you which way your project should go. Get in touch for a free estimate.

Why choose us

Doing Structural Concrete Properly in the Illawarra

Every structural job we take on follows the engineer's design and the relevant Australian Standards, including AS 3600 for concrete structures and AS 2870 for residential slabs and footings. Our reinforced concrete work, retaining walls, commercial concrete and industrial concrete projects all get the same careful approach.

We Build to the Drawings

Grade, slab depth, bar sizes, spacing and cover all come from the engineer, not from guesswork on the day. We read the plans before we quote, ask about anything unclear, and place everything as drawn.

Steel Ready for Inspection

Reinforcement is tied, lapped and sitting on chairs well before the truck is booked. That gives your engineer or certifier time to check it and gives us time to fix anything they pick up, without holding a pour hostage.

Right Mix, Right Docket

We order the grade, slump and aggregate the job is specified for, and check the delivery docket when each truck turns up. Water isn't added on site to make the mix easier to place, because that quietly lowers the strength you paid for.

Proper Compaction

Concrete is vibrated around the bars and into the corners of the formwork, so there are no air pockets or honeycombed edges. Good compaction is part of what lets 32 MPa concrete actually perform like 32 MPa concrete.

Curing Taken Seriously

Hot nor-westerly days, coastal wind and cold winter mornings all affect how a slab gains strength. We keep fresh concrete moist and protected for the curing period on the plans so it isn't left to dry out too fast in the first week.

Steep Block Experience

Plenty of Wollongong jobs sit on sloping blocks where a truck can't get close. We plan pump access, line runs and placement order early, so a hard-to-reach site doesn't turn into a rushed or interrupted pour.

FAQs

Questions About 32 MPa Structural Concrete

Answers to what Wollongong homeowners and builders often ask about N32 concrete, from what the number means to coastal exposure, driveway grades and pre-pour inspections.

MPa stands for megapascals, a unit of pressure. A 32 MPa mix, often written N32 on drawings, is concrete with a characteristic compressive strength of 32 MPa at 28 days. In plain terms, test cylinders taken from the mix and crushed after 28 days of standard curing should reach at least that strength, allowing for normal variation. It is a step up from the 20 and 25 MPa mixes used for many paths, patios and light residential slabs.

It is common for structural work such as house slabs and footings on reactive sites, suspended slabs and beams, retaining walls, commercial floors and driveways or hardstands that carry heavier vehicles. Engineers also lean towards higher grades where the concrete faces harsher exposure, such as properties close to the beach. The choice depends on the design and the site, so the grade on your plans is the one we pour.

It can. Salt carried on sea air along the coastal strip, from Stanwell Park and Thirroul down to Shellharbour and Kiama, gradually gets into concrete and can eventually corrode the steel inside. Australian Standards tie the minimum concrete strength and the cover to the reinforcement to the exposure conditions, so beachside jobs often end up with a higher grade and more cover. Your engineer sets the grade and cover for your site, and we make sure the steel sits at that depth and the concrete is cured well.

For a standard family driveway, a well-built 25 MPa slab with mesh on a good base is often enough. A 32 MPa mix makes sense when the driveway carries heavier loads, sits on difficult ground, is close to salt air, or when an engineer or council specification asks for it. We'll talk through how the driveway will be used and give you an honest view on which grade suits it.

On engineered work, the steel and formwork are usually inspected before the concrete goes in. Your engineer or certifier checks bar sizes, spacing, laps, chairs and cover against the drawings, and we only book the pour once that sign-off is done. On the day we check the docket for grade and slump, and where the job calls for it, test samples can be taken so the strength can be confirmed later.
